In my view, there are two skills people need to successfully navigate through life: flexibility and resilience. Therapy is the process of building these critical life skills in a safe and supportive environment without judgment or the therapist’s biases or opinions. My role as a counselor is to guide patients through self-discovery in order to gain a realistic view of self and the world around them. It’s not my job to tell anyone what to do or how to do it. Rather, I help each patient achieve the changes they need or desire in order to strengthen their well-being. You are the expert in the challenges you face, and only you know what changes you need to make. I am solution-focused and expect you to do some hard work, and I’ll walk with you in your journey and provide education, encouragement, and support along the way. - Terri Kern, MA, LPCC
My focus is to help individuals and couples grow, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. I achieve this by providing therapy in a neutral safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan.
I promise to be there for you every step of your journey. My goal is to help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, and move forward to where you want to be in your life.
Individual counseling can help you develop new insights about your life and uncover underlying issues that cause you to feel bad. Negative emotions culminate into stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other psychological disorders. I’ll help you develop new tools to handle your emotions and problems so that you can improve the quality of your life.
Couples face many challenges that can cause disconnection, anger, constant complaining, and hostility. I use the Gottman Method of of Relationship Therapy and give couples tools to communicate effectively, manage conflict, appreciate your partner, and connect with your partner is a healthy and productive way. I even help couples break up in a respectful way.
Positive parenting can be a challenge for married, single, step, and foster parents. We all want the best for our kids and often times we resort to learned behaviors from our own childhood to manage issues that arise with our children. I can help you work with your child to manage everyday problems and address discipline issues. Parenting coaching can help you create a deeper connection with your child and bring peace to your home.
Becoming a teenager or a young adult can be a difficult time for kids. Teens face issues of independence, relationships with other kids and adults, sexuality and identity. Emotional disorders such as depression, anxiety, and more serious problems such as schizophrenia and other psychological disorders become apparent during this time. Suicide is the leading cause of death for kids in this age group. I help teenagers develop healthy coping and problem solving skills that help them build their self-esteem and self-sufficiency.
Workplaces are sometimes riddled with bad bosses, unrealistic workloads, and fear of being fired or downsized. Poor coping skills at work can lead to depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and substance abuse. I can help you gain the tools you need to deal with difficult people, manage the demands placed on you, and develop the confidence needed to navigate through the rough waters.
Sometimes called Telehealth or e-counseling, I provide video and telephone therapy for patients who want to engage in counseling remotely. I have a HIPPA-compliant portal that allows us to talk face-to-face via video. We can also conduct our sessions via telephone. These methods are ideal for days where you can’t get into the counseling office but don’t want to miss a session.

It was very difficult for me to reach out and ask for help since I am such a control freak and micromanager. I was so happy to be matched with Terri. She is lovely, supportive, a wonderful listener, and has great coping suggestions for me. My life is markedly improved since I began my sessions with Terri.
